Reasons Why
You Should Use Seachem Prime in Your Aquarium
There is nothing more important to the health of your
aquarium than water quality. Untreated
tap water is harmful to all fish. Tap water contains chlorine, chloramines and
other harmful impurities, which are added to drinking water to make it safe for
human consumption. The human body can withstand this, but tropical fish cannot.
For this reason, tap water intended for use in an aquarium should be treated
with a water conditioner before being added to the aquarium. Seachem Prime is a
complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water.
Reasons to Use a Water Conditioner in
Your Aquarium
The two biggest offenders in tap water are chlorine and
chloramines, which are toxic to fish. Chlorine and chloramines hurt fish in
your aquarium in a few ways. Tropical fish have extremely thin skin, which will
burn when exposed to chlorine and chloramines. The compounds also disrupt the
function of gills and how fish transfer necessary oxygen to their bodies. Also,
since chlorine is a compound designed to kill bacteria, chlorine will kill the
beneficial bacteria necessary for a healthy aquarium. Seachem Prime is a water
conditioner that will remove both chlorine and chloramines from municipal water
supplies to provide you a safer aquarium environment for your fish.
Seachem Prime is a non-acidic product that will not impact
pH levels and will not over activate skimmers. Use Prime at start-up and
whenever adding or replacing water in your aquarium. Seachem Prime will:
- Remove chlorine, chloramines and ammonia
- Convert ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that
is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter
- Detoxify nitrite and nitrates, allowing
biofilter to more efficiently remove them
- Detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water
at typical concentration levels
- Promote production and regeneration of the
natural slime coat
Usage and Dosing of Seachem Prime
Seachem Prime is a simple product to use. The
recommended
dosage to condition water is 5 ml of
Seachem Prime for every 200 Liters of water you are treating. This will remove
approximately 1mg per Litre of ammonia, 4 mg per Litre of chloramines or 5 mg
per Litre of chlorine. Prime can be added directly to the aquarium, but it is
better if added to new water first. If you choose to add tap water directly to
your aquarium, you need to add a dose of Prime adequate to treat the entire
volume of your aquarium. When you are adding make-up water to the aquarium,
fill a container with tap water and add Prime to that container. You will only
have to treat for that volume of water. You can now add the treated water
directly to the aquarium, as it is safe.
It is important to make the water conditions for your fish
favourable to their needs. To keep fish safer in your aquarium, it is best to
use a product that will account for both chlorine and chloramines found in tap
water. A good water conditioner will neutralize these compounds. Seachem Prime
is a complete and concentrated water conditioner that will remove both chlorine
and chloramines that municipalities add to drinking water.
